The Equipment and Facilities Manager – Certified Pool Operator serves as a member of the Recreational Activities staff. This position promotes and advances the mission and goals of the Recreation department in support of the mission of Montana State University Billings. This includes but is not limited to the daily operation of the swimming pool, swimming pool events, and oversight/supervision of lifeguards (in collaboration with the Recreation and Student Event Specialist, Assistant Fitness Facilities Manager).
 
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • In collaboration with the university Facilities Services Department regularly test and adjust chemical levels (chlorine, pH, alkalinity, etc.) to maintain optimal water quality.
  • Utilize testing equipment and adhere to safety protocols when handling chemicals.
  • Maintain detailed records of water chemistry tests.
  • Lifeguard management. o Collaborative hiring, training, scheduling, and supervision of lifeguards with Recreation and Student Event Specialist, Assistant Fitness Facility Manager/Director and Athletics Director
  • In collaboration with the university Facilities Services Department inspect, maintain, and repair pool equipment (pumps, filters, heaters, etc.).
  • In collaboration with the university Facilities Services Department troubleshoot and resolve issues with pool systems.
  • Assist with inventory management of supplies and chemicals.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, local ordinances, and facility policies.
  • Respond to emergencies, including injuries and spills.
  • Train and supervise pool attendants.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the pool and surrounding areas, including decks, slides, and restrooms.
  • Perform routine cleaning tasks as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with pool staff, management, and patrons.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, chemical adjustments, and any incidents.
  • May assist with ordering supplies and equipment.
  • May serve as a lead worker for pool staff.
  • Oversight of set-up, break down, maintenance, and trouble shooting of pool timing system for swim meets.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Director of Recreation (if applicable).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Ability to set up timing system and other equipment for practice and meets. This will include but not limited to the ability bending over, reach overhead, or kneel to lift equipment of to 75lbs.
  • Ability to walk and supervise sport or other activities and events.
  • Must be available to work some evenings and weekends.
Education Required:
  • High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years of pool operator experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
  • Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator Certification.
  • Up to date CPR/AED Certification.
Experience Required:
  • Up to five (5) years of progressive experience working at a pool or aquatic facility.
  • Two (2) years of pool operator experience.
  • Experience working with university students.
  • Experience in scheduling and event management.
  • Experience working with community groups.
  • Experience working with swim clubs/teams.
  • Ability to problem solve and resolve conflict, and the desire to adapt to change
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, decision-making, and conflict resolution abilities.
Education Preferred:
  • Bachelors degree in Health & Human Performance, Physical Education, Recreation Management, Sports Management or related field.
  • Up to date RedCross Lifeguard Management Certification.
Experience Preferred:
  • Two (2) years supervisory experience.
  • Two (2) years managing swim meets.
  • Experience troubleshooting swim meet timing systems.
  • Certified CPR/AED trainer.
  • Certified lifeguard trainer.
  • Familiarity with swimming pool equipment and swim meet equipment (i.e., timing systems).
  • Aquatic Center or swimming pool management experience.
