The Director of the Office of Communications and Marketing is a full-time professional position reporting directly to the Chancellor. The Director is responsible for the development of communication, marketing, and branding strategies for the University campus and City College campus. The Director leads these efforts in support of the university’s mission, vision, and strategic plan helping advance the reputation, brand, and success, reflecting the core values of the institution and its leadership. The Director provides leadership for day to-day operations of the Office of Communications and Marketing and supervisory oversight to Yellowstone Public Radio. The Director supervises the Web Content Manager, Communications and Marketing Operations Manager, Project Coordinator, student workers, and the General Manager of Yellowstone Public Radio.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develops and implements a cohesive communications, marketing, and branding plan to increase enrollment and brand awareness.
  • Proactively works with the market to determine appropriate strategy, tactics and resource allocation including digital marketing to meet enrollment goals.
  • Develops and implements the communications and marketing department’s budget.
  • Develops strategy and negotiates contracts for advertising.
  • Oversees the content, look, and brand of all university informational pieces.
  • Develops dynamic marketing and promotional strategies for events, programs, and activities associated with the university.
  • Protects the university brand and image. Works with multimedia designer to develop guidelines for brand usage, educates internal and external audiences on the brand, and works to correct any noncompliance with the brand.
  • Works with the Vice Chancellor for Student Access and Success and the Executive Director of Undergraduate Admissions on communications and marketing efforts in constant pursuit of enrollment growth for all of the university’s colleges.
  • Refines the university’s core messaging to ensure organizational consistency in all aspects of communication.
  • Directs internal communication strategies and tactics to support a cohesive and well-informed university community.
  • Collaborates with administration and colleges on communication strategies regarding new programs, new policies, and/or procedural changes.
  • Develops and maintains good working relationships with faculty, administration, staff, and students.
  • Ensures regular and timely updates as well as continual improvements to the university’s website and social media sites to align with the goals of attracting prospective students; informing current students, campus, and community; promoting university events; and recognizing student, faculty, and staff achievements.
  • Advises and gives support to all university colleges, departments, and offices on communications and marketing strategies, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Serves as the principal media liaison and spokesperson.
  • As the reputation and image management leader, the Director manages the public relations and communication functions and represents MSUB in the community and region.
  • Develops and communicates programs that enable the university to manage incidents, emergencies, and crises effectively and efficiently.
  • Serves as a member of the Crisis Management Team.
  • Fosters and maintains good working relationships with news media representatives. Works with university leadership to foster and maintain advocates among external stakeholders.
  • Ensures prompt response to inquiries from media, and provides needed information in a timely manner, including interviews, comments, news releases, news conferences, etc.
  • Assists the Chancellor when called upon for various special projects. · Serves on the Chancellor’s Cabinet.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Office environment including sitting, standing, computer use, telephone use, lifting up to 20 lbs.

EDUCATION REQUIRED:
  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, marketing, or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience and effective experience leading and managing a team and related budgets.
  • Minimum of five years with progressive responsibility working in communications, marketing, public relations, news media or related field.
  • Experience developing communication, marketing and branding strategies and plans for an organization.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to deliver quality customer service
  • Ability to think critically and analytically.
  • Track record of using good judgment and making sound decisions that demonstrate problem solving ability, adaptability, and responsiveness to change.
  • Ability to rapidly devise and execute strategic, timely, and rapid response in a crisis communication situation.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail to ensure accuracy of information.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative work relations with faculty, staff, students, and the public.
  • Skilled in working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to learn software programs and platforms relevant to the position.
  • Ability and willingness to attend university and public functions outside normal working hours including evenings and weekends.
EDUCATION PREFERRED:
  • Master’s degree in related field or combination of education and experience.
