The Residence Hall Director serves as a member of the Housing & Residence Life Senior staff team and is responsible for promoting and advancing the mission and goals of the department. Specifically, the individual is responsible for all aspects of student life in their assigned residential area and indirectly serving approximately 400 residents. This includes, but is not limited to, the daily management of the specific residence hall the individual is assigned to, program development, and communication and cooperation with a variety of campus personnel and services. The individual will provide leadership and service to develop communities that are focused on student success, retention and inclusivity. The Residence Director directly supervises approximately 15 paraprofessional staff which includes resident assistants, desk workers, and summer operations staff. The Residence Director is also a member of the on-call duty and crisis response rotation. This position reports directly to the Associate Dean of Student Engagement. This is a full-time, 12-month position live-in required position.
 
Supervision
Supervises up to 15 paraprofessionals (resident assistants, summer operations staff, student maintenance staff, desk workers, etc.), and indirectly assists in supervising the remaining residence life staff by:
  • Plan, develop, and implement a recruiting and hiring campaign and process for residence life staff and resident assistants on an annual basis.
  • Maintain on-going evaluation of resident assistants/workers that he/she directly supervises as well as conducting at a minimum of one formal semester performance evaluation for each staff member.
  • Create, implement, and facilitate all training sessions, in-service meetings, and other developmental meetings for resident assistants and student staff.
  • Maintain scheduled hours per week including office hours, 1:1s, and other meetings.
  • Conduct weekly individual staff meetings with all paraprofessional staff as well as one on one meetings with each paraprofessional in his/her area.
  • Coordinate and implement the summer housing program within the residence halls which includes summer housing and summer conferencing operations.
Community Development
  • Oversee the development and implementation of RA staff created hall/floor programming and tracking each semester.
  • Work with students to promote positive, safe and inclusive communities.
  • Meet with hall staff and other student leaders to address community issues.
  • Serve as a campus hearing officer and adjudicate cases with students who have violated the Student Code of Conduct and/or Residence Hall policies.
  • Assist with supporting students of concern related to mental health concerns.
  • Coordinate and implement residence hall strategies in relation to recruitment and retention of students in order to grow occupancy in the residence halls.
  • Collaborate with other professionals for campus recruitment and retention programs including but not limited to Yellowjacket Orientation Program, Academic Support Center, Diversity Center, Student Health Services, etc.
  • Coordinate and teach for the 1st Year RA Staff Class (fall semester).
  • Attend floor and hall-wide programs on a regular basis
  • Coordinate and facilitate student success programs throughout the academic year.
Emergency & Crisis Response
  • Respond to emergency situations within all university housing.
  • Serve on call for a minimum of one week per month.
  • Participate in emergency planning for area supervised and communicate the plan to staff supervised.
  • Serve as a member of the Conduct Review Team. ? Keep accurate records and documentation regarding Student Code of Conduct cases through Maxient system and provides senior staff with appropriate student information (as in the case of residential move to another hall).
  • Take an active role in communicating with the University Police Department regarding concerns and student safety issues.
Campus Partnerships
  • Collaborate with other professionals for campus recruitment and retention programs included, but not limited to Yellowjacket Orientation Program, Academic Support Center, Diversity Center, New Student Services, etc.
  • Assist with academic interventions for area supervised including, but not limited to mid-semester warning meetings with students and assisting with students living on campus who are on academic warning;
  • Represent MSUB and department to students, parents, and all who visit University Housing.
  • Learn and implement federal higher education laws such as Title IX and Clery in order to support compliance efforts within the university.
  • Serve on a minimum of one University, Student Access and Success; or Residence Hall committee as requested.
Collateral and Other Duties
  • Collaborate with Academic Affairs and other Campus Departments to develop and implement living learning communities (LLC) or special interest groups, development of a faculty led program within the residence halls, and program/event implementation with utilization of two classrooms within the residence halls.
  • Serve as the Residence Hall Association Advisor; assist with hiring executive committee members, recruiting student members and assisting in the facilitation and execution of programming and other RHA initiatives. Attend any Campus facilitated training or meetings for club advisors.
  • Oversee day to day building operations including submission of maintenance requests, coordinating custodial needs, etc.
QUALITIES:
General Information/Compensation
The Hall Director must be able to react quickly and correctly in any crisis situation and often demands independent and immediate judgment calls. He/she must show appropriate judgment in utilizing other campus and community resources if necessary. The Director’s accountability is essential to the effectiveness of the total program.

Working hours often fluctuate with weekend and evening duties. A standard two-bedroom apartment is provided for the live-in professional and general u-card compensation during the academic year to be used for meals, campus store purchases, etc.

Ability for professional development within advising, getting involved outside of the University in the Billings community, and the ability to travel for conferences pending availability for funding.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: No physical limitations that restrict performance during emergency situations or limit mobility throughout the residence halls.
 
Education Required:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
Experience Required:
  • Demonstrated skills in supervision, programming, student advising, conflict mediation, and managing crisis situations
  • Two years’ experience in residence life or student affairs
  • Demonstrated competence in public speaking, public relations, and written and oral communications.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and decision-making abilities.
Education Preferred:
  • Master’s Degree (Preferably in higher education, counseling, education, etc.)
Experience Preferred:
  • Experience working with learning communities and special interest housing
  • Experience advising student clubs ? Experience serving as a conduct hearing officer
  • Knowledge of student and human development theories
  • Experience managing summer camps and conferences
