Tribal Transfer Coordinator

The Tribal Transfer Coordinator supports Native students transitioning to Montana State University Billings, with a focus on students transferring from tribal colleges and other institutions. The position builds relationships with prospective and current transfer students, provides culturally responsive guidance, and connects students with academic, financial aid, admissions, and campus resources.

The Coordinator will work closely with tribal colleges, Tribal communities, campus partners, and the Native American Achievement Center to strengthen transfer pathways, reduce barriers to enrollment and persistence, and create a strong sense of belonging for Native students. The position will also assist with outreach, student events, transfer programming, and tracking student engagement and outcomes. 


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide culturally responsive support and guidance to Native students transferring to Montana State University Billings, particularly students from tribal colleges and other institutions.
  • Serve as a welcoming point of contact for prospective and current Native transfer students and assist them in navigating the transfer process.
  • Connect students with Admissions, Financial Aid, Advising, academic programs, and other campus resources.
  • Build relationships with tribal colleges, Tribal communities, and community partners to strengthen transfer pathways to MSUB.
  • Conduct outreach to prospective Native transfer students through email, phone, campus visits, events, Assist with Native student recruitment, transfer events, orientation, workshops, and other programming.
  • Work closely with the Native American Achievement Center (NAAC) to help transfer students develop a sense of belonging and connection to campus.
  • Help identify and address barriers that may affect students’ enrollment, transition, and persistence.
  • Maintain appropriate records of student contacts, outreach activities, and engagement.
  • Assist with tracking transfer student participation and outcomes to support program assessment.
  • Collaborate with NAAC staff and campus partners on initiatives that support Native student success.
  • Participate in occasional evening or weekend events as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, and other engagement activities.


Required Qualifications:

  • Experience working with Native American/Indigenous students, communities, Tribal colleges, or Tribal organizations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, campus partners, and community organizations.
  • Ability to work independently while also working effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Commitment to supporting Native students and creating a welcoming and inclusive campus environment.
  • Position requires frequent walking across the MSUB campus and between campus buildings.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time
  • Ability to travel to tribal communities, tribal colleges, schools, and community events as needed.
  • Regular driving may be required to attend outreach activities, meetings, events, and programs at various locations.
  • Ability to transport and set up outreach materials and supplies for events and programs.
  • Work may occasionally require evening or weekend hours to support student events and community outreach activities.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to meet university requirements for operating a university vehicle, if applicable.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Experience working in higher education, student services, recruitment, advising, or outreach.
  • Experience working with tribal colleges or Indigenous-serving institutions.
  • Familiarity with the Montana University System and/or Montana Tribal communities.
  • Knowledge of college admissions, financial aid, transfer processes, or student support services.
