The Billings Chamber is hosting tours of the Yellowstone County Detention Facility for a firsthand experience of the jail and to learn about the jail expansion plan. Over the last few months, we’ve taken over 150 business leaders through the jail to better understand the current situation. Additionally, the Chamber Board of Directors voted to execute a political action campaign to assist with passage of the bond and levy. The Yellowstone County Detention Facility has been overbooked for at least the last 10 years, resulting in an overcrowded facility and the unfortunate reality that some inmates who should be in jail are let out to make room for even more dangerous people. It’s a reality and a challenge that our community faces. Yellowstone County Commissioners will place a bond and mill levy on the November 2026 ballot, meaning residents will vote on a needed jail expansion. We encourage all of our members to learn as much as they can before that November vote.
